He is a second generation country music star but he is paving his own path and on his way to making his own mark on Nashville’s music of choice. With songs like “It Goes Like This” and “Make Me Wanna,” both of which went to No. 1, up and coming artist Thomas Rhett is off to a really great start. He started out playing the drums in Jr. High and would often go on stage with his father, Rhett Akins, and play drums for him. We are going to take a look at one of country music’s newest stars, Thomas Rhett.
When Rhett got a cut on Jason Aldean’s 2010 album “My Kinda Party” with “I Ain’t Ready to Quit,” things really started happening for him. Since that time he has blazed his own trail. After signing to Big Machine Records in 2011, he released his debut album “It Goes Like This.”
Further, Thomas Rhett is not afraid to jump in and collaborate with his peers. He sang guest vocals along with Justin Moore on Brantley Gilbert’s “Small Town Throwdown” and it has proven quite successful for all three artists. The song has sold 400,000 copies and reached No. 16 on the Billboard charts.
Music seemed to be the only career choice for Rhett from a young age and his love life was also influenced early on as well. You hear of love stories in country songs all the time but Thomas Rhett married Lauren Gregory on October 12, 2012, and they met in the first grade. His whole life seems to have been leading up to this moment, the love of his life in music and marriage.
His dad is a very big influence on his music and his career. They write a lot of songs together and also perform together when the opportunity presents itself. In the third week of September in 2013, five songs among the Top 10 were songs that Rhett or his father had written together.
Rhett released a new single on April 7 of this year called “Crash and Burn” which is the first single from his new studio album. I think we will be hearing a lot more from Rhett, who was nominated both the ACM and CMA New Artist of the Year awards last year, because he is just getting started. Country Music has evolved over the past few years and if you look at patterns from the past it usually comes full circle and Rhett has has a new kind of country for a new generation.
