When you think of Alabama-style rock ‘n’ roll, you think of Southern rock – songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” There is a different kind of rock ‘n’ roll that made its way to Nashville, all the way from Birmingham, Alabama: a group with a clean rock ‘n’ roll sound. Sporting a heavy acoustic sound with a trumpet as the lead instrument, they have signed a publishing deal with Major Bob Music. Within two years, they have written their first No. 1 Billboard song, and the band was nominated for an MTV O Music Award, have been tapped for Red Bull’s Sound Select artist development program, and were chosen by CMT Edge as their first unsigned “Listen Up” artist. We’re going to take a look at one of Nashville’s premier indie rock groups, John & Jacob.
John & Jacob, with their combination of “feel good” rock ‘n’ roll and gospel-style harmonies, have honed their sound by performing together for almost ten years. “Our families lived in the same area, so we grew up performing together as long as we can remember,” claims singer Jacob Bryant. “We are not kin to each other, but the entire band might as well be brothers. We live in a band house here in Nashville, so we can rehearse a lot, and we are all close friends. When I was in the sixth grade, I started picking up instruments around the time John and I started performing together.”
“We released our independent debut album on October 6th of last year, and four days later we got to make our debut at the Grand Ole Opry. That was an incredible experience, performing on the same stage that so many legends have performed,” explained John Davidson. “We are signed as writers at Major Bob’s Music, and they are pushing us as artists. We have some showcases coming up, and we hope something will come of it. We have been talking with some labels, and it looks promising, but right now we are not on a label. We are going to keep recording and writing, and hopefully it will all work out.”
“We head to the United Kingdom on the 28th of January for about two weeks to perform. We have a lot of radio play over there, and it was felt that would be a great place to start. When we get back, we start a two-month tour with Kacey Musgraves. That begins on February 12th,” John and Jacob both explained. “It looks like it’s going to be an exciting year, and we look forward to all the shows and a chance to make new fans.” John and Jacob write together and already have a No. 1 song called “DONE,” performed by The Band Perry. This is just the beginning for these guys. They have their eyes focused on the stars!
The band consists of John Davidson and Jacob Bryant on vocals, Jake Thrasher on bass, Trevor Davis on drums, and Austin Taylor Smith, who is the band’s utility guy/keyboardist or whatever instrument a certain song requires. Splitting time between writing, touring and recording in the studio, these guys stay pretty busy. Their new song “Be My Girl” has gained popularity on Nashville’s independent radio station Lightning 100 and Birmingham Mountain Radio in their hometown. They have a clean rock ‘n’ roll acoustic sound, almost from the days of yesteryear that make you want to drive a little faster while you’re listening in your car.
