Country Music Hall of Fame singer and songwriter Jimmy Fortune is ready for the release of his new album Hits & Hymns. The album will be a combination of some of Fortune’s classic hits from his days with The Statler Brothers and some popular Gospel hymns.
Fortune calls it “a God thing”. He says, “It was all in God’s time. God meant for this to happen. It was nothing that I planned.” Fortune claims the album came out of the blue thanks to Ben Isaacs. “When Ben and I got together I told him I had produced or co-produced everything up to that point. I told Ben that I was going to trust him and back off and let him have it.”
Fortune says that Isaacs told him that the hymns had been heard millions of times, but his goal was to make people feel like they were hearing them for the very first time. Fortune clarifies, “He did that. I feel like he’s an angel sent straight from heaven and I’m glad I had the wherewithal to say you take it and run with it and just let me sing.”
The album features collaborations that, when reflecting back on, Fortune finds himself emotional. “I’m very, very proud of it. I’m proud of my guest artists that played on it. These are people who have impacted my life and influenced me. First of all, Vince Gill is my favorite singer of all time and I’m not ashamed to say it. I’ve always looked up to him. In every aspect of his writing and musicianship I’ve always thought he was one of the best. To have him actually sing on a project with me was an honor. When I heard him sing Amazing Grace with Sonya Isaacs I cried.” Fortune is sincere when he says everyone on this album means so much to him.
The album will coincide with the special edition DVD, Jimmy Fortune: Hits & Hymns, hosted by Bill Gaither. Taped in Indiana, the DVD features Fortune performing songs from the new CD set to release October 23, 2015.
When asked what to expect in the future, Fortune says that his future is open. “I’m still learning and I still feel like I have something to say. I have a purpose when I get up in the morning. My purpose is to help someone. My job as a songwriter is to open myself up spiritually to what God wants to say to somebody.” This album certainly does that.
