Lots of fun things are happening around town this weekend. On second thought, it’s Nashville and there are fun things every weekend! Here are a few awesome things we have to share with our loyal readers this week.
Nashville is proud to boast Cheekwood Botanical Garden as it’s public garden. There are many locals who have never been to Cheekwood. Friday is National Public Gardens Day and a perfect opportunity to visit. Head over to Cheekwood to celebrate its beauty and join in a day of promoting preservation of our environment and learning about plant conservation.
Of course, we can’t go without mentioning that the Iroquois Steeplechase is this weekend. Steeplechase has been captivating spectators for 74 years with its traditions and spirit. Executive director Libby Cheek says, “once you go, you’re hooked”. If you plan to attend, brace yourself to see lots of large hats and colorful apparel. Steeplechase is not only a fun day, but also a great place to reconnect with old friends or meet new friends and network all while supporting a great cause: Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
If you prefer chickens over horses then the Second Annual East Nashville Chicken Chase and Hot Hen Showdown is for you! Friday night, leading up to the big chase, A Taste of the Wild Wild East feast is bound to get anyone in the mood for Saturday’s festivities. For only $25 event goers can enjoy music from the HogSlop String Band, Moonshine and Whiskey Tastings, a Cigar Lounge, Texas Hold’em, and food choices including chicken and dumplings, BBQ pork belly sliders, and hot chicken and buttermilk waffles.
The events on Saturday are free, which include a dance showdown, petting zoo, Hot Hen Fashion Show, square dancing, and of course the Chicken Chase Race. These chickens have been cooped up all winter and are ready to get out and run!
